Extended, weekendlong lane closures on Route 28 in Harmar will begin Friday, according to PennDOT.

The single-lane restrictions will occur in both directions on Route 28 on two bridges, as crews work on expansion dam replacement and approach road reconstruction.

Work on the northbound lanes is set to begin at 6 p.m. Friday and end at 3 p.m. Monday; work on the southbound lanes will run from 9 a.m. Friday through 6 a.m. Monday.

Lane closures will be at the bridge over Route 910 at the Harmar exit. Another lane closure will occur on the bridge over the Pennsylvania Turnpike, about a mile north of the Route 28 Harmar exit.

The projects are part of a $27.7 million highway restoration plan on Route 28 between the Harmar and Russellton/Creighton exits. Construction includes milling and resurfacing concrete pavement preservation, bridge rehabilitation and preservation, guardrail and drainage improvements, highway lighting, traffic signals, accessible curb ramps, signage and pavement marking.

Long-term, single-lane restrictions are planned during most of the construction, which is expected to be completed in early 2024. All work is weather permitting.

Swank Construction Co. is the contractor.
