John Fiorina remembers the first time he became aware of Kevin the Peacock. He was walking along the road where he would eventually live when he heard something that he said sounded like a pterodactyl.

The flashy and sometimes noisy bird can be heard most mornings at 4 a.m. or at night around 8 p.m., honking loudly, Fiorina said.

“You can hear him all over town,” the 53-year-old said.

Kevin would become his neighbor years later, in 2018, when Fiorina moved into his Leechburg home across from the maple tree where the peacock often lands.

He also loves relaxing on the sundial in the backyard, Fiorina said.

Fiorina said Kevin has been in the area for 13 years.

While Fiorina does not own Kevin, the peacock has gained internet fame within the Leechburg community from Fiorina’s frequent updates of what the bird is doing. He said he was prompted to post more publicly about the bird when community members asked about Kevin’s whereabouts.

His Facebook posts garner more than 100 likes and comments from people expressing their enjoyment of seeing the colorful bird.

“ ‘Where’s Kevin?’ They want pictures because, for some, it cheers them up.”

Fiorina invites community members to take pictures. He said sometimes he will see people in the driveway to get a glimpse of the peacock.

His sister, Denise Fiorina-Brzezinski, said she enjoys watching various animals explore her brother’s yard. They are pretty tame and stop by for an evening snack, Fiorina-Brzezinski said.

“We all love Kevin. Leechburg’s school mascot needs to be changed to the Blue Peacocks,” she said.

Becky Bollinger, a longtime Leechburg resident, immediately called the peacock “Kevin” when she first heard him.

“I think everyone watched that movie and called him Kevin. He sounds like Kevin in the movie ‘Up,’ ” she said.

Bollinger calls Fiorina the animal whisperer because he has attracted various animals, such as cats and deer to his yard, in addition to Kevin.

Kevin is harmless and loves the attention he receives, but Fiorina said he is concerned about how people who are unfamiliar with the area might react during an encounter.

Fiorina is happy to see the positive responses he has received from the community and plans to continue to share Kevin’s daily activities.

“If this brings joy and happiness to people, it is a good thing,” he said.
