Fawn Township Secretary Pam Ponsart was pleasantly surprised to learn last week that the township had earned a state grant for road work.

“I had no idea,” Ponsart said. “That’s great.”

The township will receive $50,000 from the Gaming Economic Development Tourism Fund, which announced the awards Wednesday.

Fawn is among six municipalities across the Alle-Kiski Valley to share more than $600,000 in grants.

In total, nearly $9.4 million was disbursed to communities in Allegheny County this year.

Harrison, Harmar and West Deer all will receive money for parks, anti-blight and traffic safety, among other projects.

In Fawn, the grant is expected to be used to pave a 1-mile stretch of Thompson Road.

“It will be up to supervisors if they’re going to do it now or wait,” Ponsart said, noting that two bridges along the road are scheduled for work through Allegheny County.

Supervisors are eyeing the stretch of Thompson Road from Route 908 to Dawson Road.

“It’s a fairly good piece,” she said.

Work is estimated to cost just more than $425,000.

Grant money is made available through a portion of casino gambling revenue collected by the state and is distributed through the Allegheny County Redevelopment Authority.

Supervisors meet next at 6 p.m. Feb. 8 at the township building, 3054 Howes Run Road.
