Fire broke out on the fifth floor of the Springdale Manor apartments in Springdale on Tuesday, June 22.

Dozens of residents were evacuated and one man was taken to a hospital Tuesday in connection with a fire at Springdale Manor apartments, a senior high-rise along Pittsburgh Street in Springdale.

Allegheny Valley Regional Emergency Management Agency coordinator Bruno Moretti said the incident began about 7:20 p.m. at the Allegheny County Housing Authority complex.

He said the fire was contained to apartment No. 508, which was believed to be the only uninhabitable unit after the fire was knocked down.

Pittsburgh Street was blocked off at the intersections of Colfax and Porter streets.

Springdale Manor residents sat outside for hours as firefighters from multiple municipalities responded to the scene.

Kenny Birch, 71, lives on the sixth floor. He said the smoke and fire alarms went off inside the building.

“They put in a new system last year, and it’s loud enough to wake the dead,” Birch said.

He thanked emergency responders for their professionalism and courtesy.

First responders gave water bottles to many of the residents outside.

Firefighters from Plum, Arnold, New Kensington, Tarentum, Frazer, Brackenridge, Springdale and East Deer responded.

“That was out of an abundance of caution because of the heat,” Moretti said. “We have enough companies on standby. It was taken care of quickly.”

No update was available on the condition of the resident taken to the hospital, and no other injuries were reported.

The Allegheny County Fire Marshal is investigating.
