A woman was taken to a hospital as a precaution after her Allegheny Township home went up in flames Thursday night.

Crews from multiple departments responded about 8:40 p.m. to a two-alarm fire at the two-story house in the 100 block of River Forest Drive.

Township Fire Chief Mike Nickels said the home has significant damage but was reluctant to call it a total loss.

He said a generator being used at the home may have caused the blaze. Electricity service had been lost on the street after Wednesday’s thunderstorms brought down trees and wires.

“When the first crews got here, the whole back of the house was fully engulfed in flames,” Nickels said.

The woman was inside the home at the time of the fire but made it out safely. Nickels said she will be staying with family.

Firefighters from Saxonburg, Vandergrift, Arnold, West Leechburg, South Buffalo Township, Harrison and Markle responded.

Nickels said he needed the additional manpower and trucks due to the heat and to help provide water. There were no hydrants nearby.

Crews began clearing the scene around 10:20 p.m. No injuries were reported.
