An Allegheny Township police officer monitors a closed portion of Route 356 on Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2021.

Authorities closed a portion of Route 356 in Allegheny Township late Wednesday morning because of flash flooding from the remnants of Hurricane Ida.

The closure began around 11:30 a.m. between LaBelle Vue Road and Park Road, by Northmoreland Park.

PennDOT spokesman Jay Ofsanik said he expected to road to remain closed through the evening.

“As soon as the water recedes and it’s safe, we will reopen. At this point, we don’t have an estimate,” Ofsanik said.

Ofsanik reminded motorists to not try to drive through standing water.

“You can’t tell how deep the water is and water can cause cars to float away,” Ofsanik said. “Water can come up very suddenly and dangerously. Take a few miles out of your way and drive around it.”

Allegheny Township police were on the scene helping to redirect motorists.
