Fox Chapel officials recently swore in new junior council members. Shown here are, from left, Councilwoman Sarah Hanna, junior council mentor; Amanda DeGregory of U.S. Rep. Chris Deluzio’s office; Shady Side Academy junior and junior council member Avery Litwin; Fox Chapel Mayor Alex Scott; Shady Side Academy junior and junior council member Ethan Kolek; Shady Side Academy President Bartley Griffith, Jr., Councilman Bradley Harrison, a junior council mentor, and Fox Chapel Area High School senior Logan Dressman.

Two Shady Side Academy students recently took their seats as junior Fox Chapel Council members.

Mayor Alex Scott administered the oath of office to Avery Litwin and Ethan Kolek on Sept. 18.

The council selected Litwin and Kolek out of four candidates in August.

Litwin is a member of the academy’s student council, vice president of the Model UN Club, co-founder of the International Club, a standout on the varsity cross country, swim and track and field teams. She volunteers to teach/tutor elementary students in French, math and English weekly.

Kolek is also a member of the International Club and the varsity cross country and track and field teams. He is a student liaison for the performing arts department, vice president of a student-run performing arts club and student associate of the admissions committee.

Junior council members do not vote on issues brought before council. They cannot participate in executive sessions and closed-door discussions. The program is designed to develop leadership skills and help youths have a voice in their municipality.

Litwin and Kolek also received congratulatory letters from U.S. Rep. Chris Deluzio, D-Aspinwall.
