Nothing screams back-to-school like a new backpack.

Kiski Area School District faculty, staff and volunteers are making sure any students enrolled in the district have access to a new backpack this year with a free giveaway event Thursday at Kiski Area High School.

The Back to School Backpack Bash, in it’s third year, offers a drop-in, casual “shopping” experience for students and their families.

Co-organizers English teacher Emily DePanicis-Saxion and Kiski Area school resource Officer Charity Hollis have been collecting and organizing backpacks and school supplies for months.

“It means a lot because the kids that come to school with nothing don’t have the same advantages and opportunities as some of the other students,” Saxion said. “I noticed the need and I’m really excited and amazed at how the community comes together to donate.”

Kiski enrolls more than 3,000 students and, to date, more than 450 free backpacks have been distributed during the annual event.

About 15 volunteer students from Kiski Area High School Key Club step up to handle distribution on the day of the bash.

The event runs from 2 to 6 p.m.

Saxion said the supplies ran out around 4 p.m. last year.

“We had a line the whole way down the sidewalk waiting to get in around when we opened the doors,” Saxion said. “People were saying thank you and they were so happy.”

Free co-ed haircuts will be provided by two stylists, including one from Fashion’s Ahead in Allegheny Township.

Attendees can enjoy music, visit and take photos with superheroes and princesses, have their faces painted, shop the Cavalier Closet (free student clothing store) and sign up for Pennsylvania CHIP student benefits.

“The atmosphere I wanted to create is a retail experience. I want the kids to shop and pick out their supplies,” Saxion said.

Snacks and drinks will be provided.

Registration is not required.

Superintendent Misty Slavic emphasized the collaborative efforts of the staff, parents, student volunteers and area businesses in working together to make this event successful.

“We’re a family in Kiski Area School District, and Cavaliers will always support Cavaliers,” Slavic said. “This event offers our Cavalier families the opportunity to receive everything their students need to start the school year.”
