Freeport Area High School projects underway
Freeport Area’s three remedial high school renovation projects are underway.
The building, opened in 1961, is getting a new boiler and electrical system with new generator panels. A third facet of the overall project is updating the three-classroom science wing.
Brick replacement, to match the original brick color, is being delayed by supply chain problems.
The updating of the science wing also is plagued by supply chain issues.
Superintendent Ian Magness said work on the $3 million project will gather steam after the school year is over and will be finished by the time students return in late August.
The work is being financed through a traditional bank loan from Webster Bank, as opposed to a bond issue. The interest rate will be 4.84%. Officials said that choice will save the school district about $60,000 in interest payments.
Looming in the future is a master plan for renovations at the high school. A recent study and architectural plan are part of ongoing discussions.
Renovations would, at least, include replacing, enlarging or relocating the gymnasium and the cafeteria as more families with school-age students move into the district.
Work this summer will include parking lot repairs at the school district’s four buildings and HVAC updates at Buffalo Elementary. That work is budgeted and would not need bank loans or a bond issue.
Business manager sought
Officials said interviews are getting underway to replace departing Business Manager Brad Walker, who is taking a similar position with the Highlands School District.
The school board, however, voted Thursday to retain Walker for consultation purposes for $60 per hour starting Jan. 1 through no later than June 30, or until a successor is hired.
Magness said the school district is exploring a number of options to replace Walker and hopes to hire a replacement in January or February.
