A Lower Burrell tradition will come into bloom later this month.

The Burrellton Garden Club’s May Mart is set for 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 20, at the Lower Burrell city garage, on Schreiber and Bethel streets. Among its offerings will be annuals, perennials, hanging baskets, herbs and vegetables.

“Everyone seems to enjoy our May Mart because our perennials come from our members’ gardens,” said Maggie Davis, the club’s membership chairwoman. “And the annuals we order are gorgeous.”

The May Mart has been going on for a couple of years now, Davis said. Proceeds benefit the community gardens that the club manages.

Gardens maintained by the club include the pollinator garden at Burrell Lake Park, two plots at City Hall, the Route 56 and Leechburg Road intersection, the veterans memorial at Stewart Elementary School and one in Braeburn Heights.

The event will include rock painting for children from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Davis said. In addition to plants, the club will sell coffee, doughnuts and soft drinks.

“May Mart is a great event in the city and something we look forward to every year,” said City Councilman Chris Fabry. “The Garden Club does an amazing job of upkeep throughout the city, and this provides an opportunity for everyone to, in turn, support them.”

Mayor John Andrejcik also gave the event a positive review and hopes people will patronize the market Saturday.

“These are volunteer people who clean up the city. … They do some tremendous work,” Andrejcik said.

There are about 19 members in the Burrellton Garden Club, Davis said. The club is accepting new members, and more information is available on its Facebook page.
