Gilpin is considering a proposal to allow all-terrain vehicles on more than two dozen township roads.
ATVs would still be banned on state roads such as Route 66, but the proposal would allow them on 25 township roads in the mostly rural township of 14 square miles, according to Supervisor Charlie Stull. Some of the roads are paved, while others are not.
“High-traffic roads are not included,” Stull said.
Gilpin Patrolman Keith Lazaron said he has spoken with about a dozen township residents and they liked the idea.
“People would have more access to camps or to use ATVs for recreation and then drive to a store without having to return to the home for a car, truck or cycle,” he said.
Lazaron said a permit fee would be charged for ATVs to use the roads, which include Meyers, Forks Church, Sportsman’s, Shearer and Johnetta roads.
