The movie theater at the Pittsburgh Mills mall is shown in this Jan. 15, 2021, file photo. It is reopening under new ownership on March 31.

The movies are returning to the Pittsburgh Mills mall in Frazer.

The mall’s theater will reopen under new management Wednesday. GQT Movies is replacing Cinemark, which closed the theater nearly a year ago.

Six of the theater’s 18 screens will be up and running on opening day, while another three will be available for use by Memorial Day.

“We will continue to follow guidelines for capacity set by Allegheny County officials as we open and then expand,” GQT Movies Pittsburgh Mills General Manager Sharon Goldstein said.

The Michigan-based company’s website said GQT Movies formed last July after Goodrich Quality Theaters filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy that February.

Michigan-based GQT Movies’ Chief Operating Officer Matt McSparin predicted the Mills location would be a success.

“We were presented with the opportunity to reopen the old Cinemark location and, after examining the situation, felt confident we could be successful here,” he said.

GQT Movies’ ticket prices will range from $5 to $7.

The company said tickets for seniors, military members, students, children and afternoon matinees will be $5.75, while all tickets will be $5 on Mondays and Tuesdays. In another special on Tuesdays, the theater will offer two movie tickets, two medium soft drinks and a large tub of popcorn for $22.

“It is our belief that if we combine great value with great service and an experience, that we will create repeat customers, which is our ultimate goal,” McSparin said.

Frazer Supervisor Lori Ziencik said township officials are excited to see the theater occupied again.

“There is no doubt that it will generate traffic to the mall, but how the mall owners utilize that benefit in attracting more new leases is yet to be seen,” she said.

Mills General Manager Ernest Diaz said management is looking forward to bolstering the tenants in place with new opportunities at the mall.

McSparin said GQT Movies has appreciated what he described as a warm reception from the township, mall, vendors and others.

“We look forward to being a part of this community well into the future,” McSparin said.

GQT Movies Pittsburgh Mills is still hiring.
