A hard to recycle event set to be held at the Pittsburgh Mills mall in Frazer later this month is full. But people can join the wait list in hopes of a cancellation.

The collection event is being offered by the Pennsylvania Resources Council. It will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24. Advanced registration was required because of the coronavirus.

Frazer Supervisor Lori Ziencik said such events allow people to get rid of items that aren’t typically picked up by garbage haulers, such as tires, computer monitors and batteries. The council couldn’t be reached for comment.

“If this type of event is not held, municipalities will find these items such as TV’s and old computer equipment thrown along the roads because they cannot be thrown in the regular trash,” Ziencik said.

New procedures will be in place because of the coronavirus. Staffers ask that participants place the items they want recycled in their car trunk or truck bed, wear face masks, stay in their vehicles, and pay with credit cards or debit cards to limit the amount of contact between staffers and participants. Staffers won’t accept batteries, compact fluorescent lamps and media such as VHS tapes, DVDs and cassette tapes for that same reason.

The council has been holding hard to recycle events since 2003. During that time, it has recycled 2 million pounds of electronics, more than 12,000 tires and roughly 3,700 appliances.

Items that can be recycled for free include:

• Cellphones

• Tablets

• Servers and modems

• DVD players and VCRs

• Microwaves

• Copiers and scanners

• Electronic cables

• Video game consoles

• Computer towers

Items that require a fee to be recycled include:

• Computer monitors, $20

• Televisions, $30 each;

• Console or rear projection TVs, $40 each

• Printers, $5 each

• Small appliances containing Freon such as dehumidifiers, $10 each

• Fluorescent tubes, $2 per 4 foot tube

• Tires, $4 without rims, $10 with rims

• Hard drives, $11 each, $3 for each additional hard drive

A full list of items that can be recycled and additional information can be found on the Pennsylvania Resources Council website.
