Harmar supervisors no longer have a vacant seat on the board.

David Buchman was appointed Thursday to fill the vacancy left after Patricia Janoski resigned in February.

He will serve the rest of this year, which was the sixth and final year of Janoski’s term. The vote was unanimous.

Buchman was one of two people to apply for the position. There were no formal interviews, but candidates submitted resumes.

“It’s going to be an exciting nine months,” Buchman said. “I never thought I’d run for public office.”

Buchman said he put his resume in because he’s been a member of the planning commission and has become interested in the decisions made by supervisors. He’s been following recent decisions, including the approval of the Allegheny Health Network hospital proposed for the township. That project, already approved the township, has been delayed because of land issues, according to AHN officials.

“There’s a lot of important stuff going through here,” he said.

Buchman has lived in Harmar for about seven years. He’s a retired lawyer who formerly lived in Columbus, Ohio. He moved to the area to be close to his children and grandchildren.

In addition to the planning commission, Buchman also was appointed as the Harmar representative on the board considering what to do with the former Colfax Elementary School building. He’s also running for an open seat on the Allegheny Valley School Board in the May primary.

Supervisors Chairman Bob Seibert said Buchman had an impressive resume and has demonstrated an interest in public service.

Seibert said he thought both candidates were qualified, but Buchman was the only one to attend Thursday’s meeting, which he said was an important deciding factor.

Contact information for the other candidate, Holly Bills, was not immediately available.
