Nearly a dozen roads in Harrison are on tap to be repaved this year.

Commissioners voted to spend about $311,000 for paving projects that include Broadview Boulevard, the busy street that runs parallel with Freeport Road.

The contract was awarded to Shields Asphalt Paving of Richland.

Work hasn’t been scheduled yet.

“The bid was just awarded, and the contractor has not provided a schedule to the township yet,” Township Manager Amy Rockwell said. “We typically do not pave until after Memorial Day.”

Rockwell said roads throughout the township are evaluated each year by the public works superintendent who then makes recommendations to the township commissioners.

Included in this year’s list are:

• Forest Drive, from Altermoor Drive to Summit Drive;

• Acee Drive, from Silverville Road to the cul-de-sac;

• Primrose Lane, from Saxonburg Road to the stop sign;

• Gordon Street, from Freeport Road to Hemlock Street;

• Park Avenue, Springhill Road to the second stop sign;

• Broadview Boulevard, from J.P. Marino Boulevard (Heights Plaza) to the new asphalt;

• Montana Avenue, from Freeport Road to Mack Street;

• Cambridge Street, from Alabama Avenue to Minnesota Avenue;

• Veterans Way, from River Avenue to the kayak launch;

• Delaware Avenue.

Commissioners budgeted $400,000 this year for paving. Some said they were pleased that the bid came in more than 25% below what they expected.

Harbison Street

The commissioners also have committed to another significant road improvement project this year. Harbison Street, in the township’s 4th Ward, is expected to be reconstructed.

The road is eroding because it has no storm sewers and rainwater runoff has nowhere to go.

The township applied for nearly $500,000 through the state’s Commonwealth Financing Authority to help pay for the work.
