Harrison commissioners OK removing roads from projects
Harrison may not be able to repair all the roads it planned to this year.
The township sought bids to resurface 18 roads and to seal and coat nine alleys and lanes.
The two contracts came in at $481,500, nearly $80,000 more than the township budgeted, according to township Engineer Raymond Antonelli Jr., vice president of NIRA Consulting Engineers.
To deal with that, commissioners have approved giving Antonelli the authority to eliminate work as needed to keep the project within budget. Commissioner Gary Lilly voted against the measure.
Antonelli said he anticipates removing two blocks of Roosevelt Street from the road resurfacing work, and at least two alleys, which he did not identify.
The work on Roosevelt would have been particularly expensive because of the road’s very poor condition, Antonelli said.
The $409,000 resurfacing contract had been awarded to A. Liberoni of Plum. The township had budgeted $350,000.
The $72,500 contract for work on the alleys and lanes was awarded to Russell Standard of O’Hara.
Commissioner Robin Bergstrom suggested the township spend the additional money now to fix the roads. “We’re going to have to do them some time,” she said.
But Township Manager Rich Hill said the township can’t spend more than what had been budgeted.
