The mysterious metal shards that littered Harrison roads remain a head-scratcher for police.
Chief Brian Turack said officers continue to investigate after his phone lines were flooded Wednesday with reports of sharp fragments causing flat tires.
Social media saw dozens of people saying their vehicles fell victim to the uniform-shaped pieces found on Freeport Road, Route 28, Burtner Road and Route 908. Reports came from as far as East Deer and the Pittsburgh Mills in Frazer.
“The municipality needs to get out on the road with magnets and pick up all those metal shards that fell out of the scrap bin,” one user wrote.
“Somebody needs to pay up!” said another.
In the meantime, police are asking people not to inundate 911 with reports of tire hazards.
Turack is asking people to instead file a damage report at harrisontwp.com/police/condition-report.
Police are also asking anyone who saw metal debris falling from a commercial vehicle to contact them and file a report.
Turack said he is working with PennDOT, Allegheny County, local manufacturing facilities and scrapyards to determine the origin of the shards.
PennDOT said a broom truck cleaned Burtner Road and Freeport Road, between Burtner and Springhill roads. They also swept the Freeport Road corridor between Heights Plaza and Walmart.
As of late Wednesday, PennDOT said they had not collected any metal pieces.
