Harrison seeks 1st Ward resident to fill commissioner's vacancy

Harrison residents who live in the 1st Ward can apply to fill a vacancy on the township’s board of commissioners.

Longtime board member Chuck Dizard submitted his resignation Monday, leaving an unexpired term of about 2½ years.

Anyone interested in the term must submit a letter of interest and an application to township Manager Amy Rockwell by Aug. 15.

Rockwell said the appointment will run through the board reorganization in January. The seat was reported to the county elections division as vacant for the fall election, she said. Whoever is appointed would have to run for election this fall to retain the seat.

Commissioner Jim Erb hopes the vacancy draws a lot of interest.

“It’s a good place to live,” he said. “Hopefully, we have people who are interested in moving the township forward and getting some new businesses in here.”

Dizard announced his retirement in early July, saying the decision was personal. He said he hopes to see younger people serving in local government and leading the township through its next challenges.

He plans to remain active in the township through the many efforts he has been involved in, including the tree committee, recreation board and Earth Day cleanups. He also serves on the Upper Allegheny Valley Joint Sanitary Authority.
