Highlands School District will start online learning for students on March 30 before students return to schools on April 14, Superintendent Monique Mawhinney announced in an update on the district’s website Monday.

The notice cites Gov. Tom Wolf’s decision to extend the statewide closure of schools for two weeks through April 6. The initial two-week closure was due to run out at the end of this week.

Because it would resume classes during Highlands’ scheduled spring break, Mawhinney said all of the district’s buildings, facilities and fields will remain closed through April 13.

“Our spring break will remain as previously scheduled for Thursday, April 9 through Monday, April 13,” her letter states. “Classes for all Highlands students will resume on-site on Tuesday, April 14, unless another school closure extension is issued.”

Highlands will transition to online instruction for students starting March 30, Mawhinney wrote. The district is finalizing an education plan for all students; the district will provide families with more information with specific guidance for students later this week.

Highlands is asking families to complete an online technology access survey.

“I know that if we continue to work together and stay strong, we can get through this tragic event,” Mawhinney wrote. “Please be there for one another and stay healthy and safe.”
