The Highlands School Board has approved changes to the district’s 2020-21 school year calendar.

As a result, the first day of school will be Friday, Aug. 28. It will be a remote learning day for all students.

The first day of school had previously been Thursday, Aug. 27. That day will now be a professional development day for teachers with no school for students.

Under the Highlands’ hybrid plan, students have been divided into two groups, “A” and “B,” and will be in schools only two days a week.

Students in Group A will be in schools on Mondays and Tuesdays. Their first in-person day will be Monday, Aug. 31.

Students in Group B will be in schools Wednesdays and Thursdays. Their first in-person day will be Wednesday, Sept. 2.

All students will work remotely on Fridays.

The school board approved the changes Monday.

Previously approved two-hour delays, half-days and professional development or clerical days have been moved to Fridays when possible.

Back-to-school nights and parent-teacher conferences will be held virtually, the district said.

The district are distributing iPads and Chromebooks through the rest of this week at the high school.

Families were required to sign up for a pickup time.
