All Highlands High School students will learn remotely through next Friday, Nov. 6, because officials said a covid-19 case resulted in a “significant” number of required quarantines.

The move to all remote learning took effect Thursday.

“The high school building will be closed and all after-school activities that are scheduled at the high school will also be canceled during this time,” school officials said in a message posted to the Highlands website.

All of the district’s other buildings will operate as normal.

“The district has made this decision out of an abundance of caution in hopes to minimize the potential for increased exposure at our High School,” the message said.

Highlands officials were not immediately available for comment, but officials from Greensburg Salem School District said they were informed Wednesday afternoon that a Highlands football player had tested positive for covid-19.

Highlands played Greensburg Salem last Friday. It was Highlands’ last game of the season.

More than 100 students in Highlands who have been learning remotely were scheduled to return to classes for the second nine-week period. The district is using a hybrid model for its in-person instruction, with two groups of students in class two days per week each. Students work remotely the other three days.

High school students are expected to log into each class virtually while the school is closed, and they are expected to return to their hybrid schedules the week of Nov. 9, according to the school district.

Last month, a student in Highlands Middle School and a student at the high school tested positive for covid-19.
