Highlands Elementary School has a new principal.

Stan Whiteman was hired at an annual salary of $108,000. His start date is not yet known, school board President Misty Chybrzynski said.

Whiteman is coming to Highlands from the Duquesne City School District, where he was director of curriculum, instruction, assessment and technology since July 2018, according to his biography on the district’s website.

He started at Duquesne in 2007 as a health and physical education teacher. He also served as athletic director and middle school football coach.

He previously served as co-director of student services and an assistant to the superintendent. He was assistant and associate principal of Duquesne Elementary School from 2014 to 2017.

Whiteman replaces Principal Samantha Perlik, who in November was named principal of Highlands Early Childhood Center. Perlik’s move was effective in January.

At the Early Childhood Center, Perlik replaced Cathy Russo, who was named acting principal of the center in October following the resignation of former Principal Heather Bigney.

Bigney is suing the district in federal court, alleging retaliation for taking unpaid leave and dating a former teacher.
