Just like the Backstreet Boys, the Highlands Golden Rams marching band is back.
For its upcoming season, the group will perform nostalgic “boy band” hits first made famous by Justin, Donnie, Nick, Brian and the like.
“At Highlands, we are fortunate to have a wealth of musically talented young students,” parent Carrie Welling said.
“We have a young band this year, and it will be exciting to see all the changes and new faces.”
This year’s half-time show will feature swoon-worthy hits from ’90s heartthrobs such as NSYNC and New Kids on the Block.
People can get a glimpse of the show during the long-running district tradition, Pie Night, scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday at Highlands Golden Rams Stadium off of Argonne Drive.
The cost is $5. It includes a slice of dessert and a beverage.
“We enjoy doing this performance as a capstone to our work each summer,” band director Matt Beresik said.
“It provides the community a great opportunity to see what the kids have been working on. Many folks aren’t able to brave some of the colder weather that comes during football season so we’re happy to give everyone a chance to see and hear our program now.”
Welling said the annual summer performance is a nice way to showcase the band’s talents.
There are countless hours of work that go on behind the scenes, and marching band allows students to learn skills beyond music, she said.
“They gain leadership and discipline,” Welling said. “Our band students are involved with planning and decision-making throughout the year, and giving the students a voice makes an impact. They become more engaged and accountable.”
In addition to performing the pre-game and halftime numbers, the band will recognize its senior members and student leaders. There will be raffles and a 50/50 drawing.
Beresik said the football team and varsity cheer squad also will be honored, and a special welcome will go out to new varsity coach Matt Bonislawski.
“We wish him, his staff and team a successful season,” Beresik said. “A lot of school programs have taken a big hit and continue to bounce back from the impacts of covid. We are extremely proud of our students’ efforts and look forward to another year of great performances.”
