ICE arrests 3 men after alleged burglary in Freeport
Three men were taken into custody by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement after, police say, the men were caught in a vacant apartment in Freeport on Monday morning.
Chris Fabec, chief of Southern Armstrong Regional Police Department, said police were called to a Lane Court townhouse in the Laneville neighborhood of Freeport on Main Street for reports of an active burglary around 4:30 a.m.
When they arrived on scene, Fabec said, officers located two men in the crawl space of the apartment’s attic.
“We were able to get one down,” Fabec said. “The other refused to come down.”
He said a third man was found in an adjoining apartment, having gotten there through the same attic crawl space.
Fabec said the men spoke only minimal English and reportedly told officers they were from Mexico. The police contacted ICE, who determined that all three males were in the country illegally.
“They all had warrants, so they were actually taken into custody by ICE,” Fabec said.
Fabec did not identifiy the men. An email to ICE asking for their idenities and additional details was not immediately answered Monday morning.
No one was injured during the incident, Fabec said, and no property was taken.
While there is no threat to the public, Fabec said, Freeport Area schools were delayed Monday morning and school buses were rerouted out of caution.
