Indiana Township hires new full-time officer

A Springdale High School alum has become the newest Indiana Township police officer.

Supervisors unanimously voted Feb. 14 to hire Damian Brand.

The 2017 Dynamo grad shook hands with township leaders that evening before taking photos with family members and police Chief Steven Colucci.

Brand worked as a West Deer officer for nearly three and a half years.

His first official day with Indiana Township was scheduled for Feb. 15.

“It was the easiest transition from West Deer,” said Brand, 24, of West Deer. “I know all the guys here. I respect Chief Colucci. I like the way he pushes the department. He wants active patrolmen.”

Brand said he was inspired to get involved in law enforcement by his uncle, David Upvall, an investigator and corporal with the Allen Police Department in Allen, Texas.

Upvall’s lessons included “always do the right thing (and) try your hardest,” according to Brand.

Colucci said his department now has 13 officers, all full time, and no part-timers. There were eight candidates for the police position.

“He’s been working within the area,” the chief said. “He’s known by all of us. He’s very well-respected within our department (and) knows how to do the job very well. He’s worked with our officers over the years that he was with West Deer really good.

“I think he’s going to be a perfect fit for the department and an asset to the township.”

Colucci said Brand will start out with general patrol and explore some options after training.

The department is involved with the North Hills Special Response Team as well as Allegheny County District Attorney’s Office initiatives.

Brand said he hopes to get involved in narcotics and help to keep drugs off the streets.

His starting salary is a little less than $55,000.
