A student at Indiana University of Pennsylvania died Friday when his car crashed over an embankment in East Franklin.

Brian H. Swatt, 21, of Lackawanna County, was pronounced dead at the scene by Armstrong County Chief Deputy Coroner Robert Bellas early Friday morning.

State System chair and chancellor, Cindy Shapira and Dan Greenstein, said in a join statement Saturday that Swatt “will be missed terribly.”

“Brian led with integrity and intelligence, and we are grateful to have had him serve on the Board of Governors … This loss is felt by everyone at the State System of Higher Education, and our hearts and prayers are with the Swatt family and the entire Indiana University of Pennsylvania community,” the statement said.

Officials said Swatt failed to stop at a stop sign at the end of Butler Road, then traveled across East Brady Road and over an embankment about 150 yards until the car, a 2014 Nissan Altima, landed on its roof.

Officials said Swatt was not wearing a seat belt.

No other details about the crash were provided.

In addition to being an IUP student, he worked for state Sen.-elect Joe Pittman, according to the Armstrong County Coroner’s Office.
