Leechburg Area Pool intends to open this year, even if only for abbreviated season
The Leechburg Area Pool still plans to open this year, but it might be later than originally planned due to the coronavirus pandemic.
In a statement posted on the pool’s Facebook page last week, members of the pool board stressed their dedication to opening the Gilpin-based pool.
“While we look forward to the opening of the 2020 season, there is a great deal of uncertainly for us all surrounding the current covid-19 situation,” board members said. “Our highest priority remains the safety of all of our staff and guests.”
“We’re closely following the guidelines set forth by federal, state, and local government officials and health experts,” the statement continued. “Because of the delay in beginning the pre-season preparations, we MAY NOT be ready for our original opening day of May 23. While it’s too soon to confidently provide an opening date, please know we remain committed to opening the pool this summer for you to enjoy as soon as safely possible.”
Board Vice President Christy Henry said preseason preparations for the pool, which normally start in March or April, will take place once it’s safe.
“We’re just watching it from week to week,” Henry said of the ongoing situation. “It is our intent to open even if it ends up being an abbreviated season.”
Board members earlier this year said they would dissolve the six-decade-old pool if new board members and volunteers weren’t found. The board has nine members, but at least five plan to resign in November.
In March, the board unanimously voted to keep the pool open because enough people stepped up to help.
Board members thanked those who have volunteered to help, and hope they’ll still be willing once preseason preparations are allowed to take place.
