Everything appeared to work out Thursday night in Leechburg.

When Hannah Bauer smelled smoke in the River Avenue house she shares with Zane Walter, she called 911.

Walter said he bought the house at a tax sale last June and was still working on it.

Luna, the border collie, smelled smoke and pointed toward upstairs in a part of the house that hasn’t been renovated yet, Walter said.

So Walter grabbed a fire extinguisher and ran upstairs.

He found a loveseat on fire and unloaded the extinguisher onto it.

Meanwhile in a very rapid response, Leechburg and other firefighters were arriving.

“They got here so quickly,” Bauer said.

“This in the fire department bingo night, and our station is just up there,” Fire Chief Robert T. “Tom” Foster said.

So plenty of firefighters arrived quickly ready to fire a fire.

The charred metal frame of the couch was pulled outside and fans were turned on to push smoke out of the two-story house.

Fortunately, little damage was done except for the couch, Foster said.
