A Leechburg man was thrown from his motorcycle and seriously injured Thursday night in Allegheny Township.

A Volkswagen struck Raymond Robinson, 30, around 6:20 p.m. at the intersection of Route 56 and Welty Drive, according to Allegheny Township police Chief Dan Uncapher.

The driver was traveling eastbound on the highway when he turned left toward Welty Drive and into the path of the oncoming motorcycle, Uncapher said. Robinson hit the rear of the vehicle and was ejected from his bike.

Robinson was flown to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, Uncapher said.

The driver, Ian Werntz, 50, of New Kensington cooperated with authorities. Uncapher said he was unsure if Werntz sustained injuries.

Authorities partly closed Route 56 between Welty and White Oak drives to investigate. That section of road has since reopened.

It’s not the first time authorities have been called for a collision at the intersection. “We’ve had multiple crashes at that intersection,” Uncapher said. “It’s just the way the road is.”
