With Westmoreland and Armstrong counties not yet restricted in terms of travel amid the coronavirus pandemic, Leechburg Area School District officials are asking parents to pick up work packets for students on Thursday.

“It is clear that nobody will be returning before April 7,” Superintendent Tiffany Nix wrote in an email to district parents that was also posted to the district’s Facebook page. “As we know, the Department of Education has declared that April 7 is the day that staff returns and April 9 is the day that students return to school.

”I can not tell you or guarantee that this calendar will hold true, but this is the guidance that we are receiving right now.”

Nix asked parents to pull up to the cafeteria entrance of the school, on Siberian Avenue, for curbside pick-up of take-home work packets.

The district is asking that parents bring a sheet of paper listing their children’s name(s) and grade level(s), and indicating whether they have at-home internet access and the ability for children to do classwork online.

The schedule for pick up is as follows:

• 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.: Last names beginning with A-G.

• 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.: H-O.

• 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.: P-Z.

• 5-5:30 p.m.: Any family that could not pick up at their scheduled time.

1 family can pick up for others

“If you cannot make it on Thursday or during your scheduled time, please do not panic or get angry. We will work something out,” Nix wrote. “We realize that this may be an inconvenience and we will work with you.”

Parents can pick up for multiple families.

“If you are doing this, please have a separate piece of paper for each family that you are picking up for and please arrange for porch delivery if you can,” Nix wrote.

Apply for free food

In addition, the district is recognizing that more parents may be eligible for free lunches for their children if they have been laid off.

Applications for free and reduced lunch are available under the “Food Service” section at Leechburg.k12.pa.us. Paper copies are also available.

“In addition, we have food bags available for any family that needs a little extra over a weekend,” Nix wrote. “We will have these bags available on Thursday during work pickup. Ask if you want one. These are available to anyone. No questions asked!”
