A town hall to raise awareness about local resources will take place this month in Leechburg.
Mayor Doreen Smeal said she decided to put the event together because it has been years since the town gathered for a similar meeting. The last town hall was hosted in 2023.
“I just think it’s time for us to get back together,” Smeal said.
The event is scheduled for 6 p.m. May 20 in the mirror room of the Marconi Club on River Avenue.
The meeting is not a borough council event, Smeal said.
“I have invited the whole council to come,” she said. “We have some new members, and I think it’s important for people to meet them.”
Speakers include representatives of nonprofits Havin and RAMPs of Hope, Lower Kiski Ambulance Service, Cross Roads Community Presbyterian Church, First United Methodist Church, First Evangelical Lutheran Church, First Baptist Church and Kiski Valley Community Church.
Smeal said each of the churches offer community programs. First United Methodist hosts a crockpot class to teach children how to cook. Cross Roads Community Presbyterian hosts free monthly “Pot Love” dinners.
“I would like to get the word out,” Smeal said. “This is available to you and there’s nothing restricting you from doing this.”
She’ll also be speaking about the borough’s new community calendar endeavor. Work is being done to set up a publicly accessible calendar through the mass notification system, Savvy Citizen.
Residents will also be able to give their feedback during the session.
Smeal hopes the town hall increases people’s awareness about borough programs. She hopes the session begins to draw people away from taking complaints to social media and steers them toward proper leadership channels.
“I want people to understand that almost anyone on council is available to speak with them,” Smeal said.
