West Deer Cub Scouts use snowfall to raise money for church roof
While many people stayed inside snuggled up and warm during the snow Sunday and Monday, Scouts from Cub Scouts Pack 965 got to work.
The Scouts worked for most of the day Sunday shoveling driveways throughout the West Deer area in exchange for donations to help East Union Community Center and Church get a new roof. Homeowners were able to sign up in advance for the service.
Of the 25 Scouts in the pack, eight members went out with their parents to shovel snow, said Brittany Colaianne, a volunteer and mother of two Scouts, Maddy and Logan. Her husband, Adam, is the troop’s scoutmaster.
The pack welcomes Scouts in kindergarten to fifth grade, but Scouts from second grade and up were out doing the shoveling.
“We all kind of split up and went to different houses and did what we could,” Colaianne said. “We just divided and conquered.”
The Scouts and their parents completed work at 15 homes between Sunday and Monday. Colaianne said the group raised about $1,400, with homes donating $50 or $100 for the work. She said they’re still waiting to collect the final totals.
“We’re trying to do something for the church,” Colaianne said. “We’re trying to give back to them for housing us.”
While the day was full of work, Colaianne said it felt more like fun for the kids.
“I think everyone really enjoyed being out and together and getting to see their friends on a day they typically wouldn’t be out and seeing their friends,” she said.
Her husband’s snowblower was a fan favorite. Colaianne said the Scouts made a game of trying to dodge the snow spray and sometimes playing in it.
A January Facebook post from East Union Community Center and Church said the center hosts a variety of community groups for meetings and asked for donations to put toward a new roof. A Zeffy donation page made for the community center’s roof fund said the roof was built in 2001 and needs to be replaced.
The page had raised $1,175 of the center’s $54,000 goal as of Monday, Jan. 26. East Union Community Center and Church did not return a TribLive request for comment.
Colaianne said she hopes the day taught the Scouts the value of working hard and giving back to their community.
