Though local officials have mostly remained silent, the Alle-Kiski Valley’s lawmakers are seeking more details after a traffic stop in Springdale ended with a local father in ICE custody on Tuesday.

Randy Cordova-Flores, 36, remains in custody at Northern Regional Correctional Facility and Jail near Moundsville, W.Va., according to ICE records.

Originally from Peru, Cordova-Flores was detained after Springdale police stopped him allegedly for failing to use a turn signal near the corner of Lincoln and James streets, his sister, Paulette Cordova, told TribLive.

Cordova-Flores has a “pending asylum” status case. He has been in the United States for nearly three years, Paulette said. He works as a landscaper but also took jobs as a food delivery driver during winter months, she said.

Cordova-Flores has a Real ID Pennsylvania driver’s license, Social Security card and current work permit, according to Paulette. A search of state and federal court dockets showed no past or pending criminal charges against him.

U.S. Rep. Chris Deluzio, D-Fox Chapel, issued a statement Thursday afternoon saying he was in contact with Cordova-Flores’ family and lawyer.

“Once again, we need answers to basic questions about the reason for his arrest and why our government is seeking to remove him from the country,” DeLuzio’s statement said. “I’ll keep fighting for answers and accountability.”

State Sen. Lindsey Williams, D-West View, said she expects to attend a protest planned for Saturday in Springdale’s main business district.

Williams described Cordova-Flores’ arrest as “devastating.” She’s concerned about the seeming increase in detainments in the area.

“The family deserves answers,” Williams said.

So far, she hasn’t been in contact with Springdale officials, however.

State Rep. Mandy Steele, D-Fox Chapel, said in a statement on social media that she’ll continue to probe for information on Cordova-Flores’ detention.

While Steele said most Americans support the removal of undocumented people with serious criminal records, she said the majority of voters also support “legal, peaceful” immigrants.

“I remain concerned that people who are pursuing a legal path to citizenship are being swept up, destabilizing communities that I represent and striking fear in the hearts of so many,” Steele’s statement said.

But so far, officials haven’t said why Cordova-Flores was detained by ICE.

ICE spokesman Jason Koontz said the agency prepared a statement about Cordova-Flores’ detainment, but it had not yet been approved for release as of Thursday afternoon.

Allegheny Valley School District, where Cordova-Flores’ two children attend school, also issued a statement Thursday acknowledging their parent’s detainment.

The district said student safety and wellbeing is its highest priority.

“All staff follow set procedures allowing visitors — including parents, community members, professionals and law enforcement officers — into our buildings,” the statement said. “We want our schools to be a safe, kind and welcoming place for all learners, regardless of their background.”

An online fundraiser in support of Cordova-Flores’ family had gathered more than $21,000 by Thursday afternoon while a letter of support for him circulating in the community purportedly had more than 150 signers.

Community members say they plan to gather at noon Saturday at the corner of Pittsburgh and School streets to call for Cordova-Flores’ release.
