“Where’d You Go, Bernadette,” which opens August 16, 2019, stars Cate Blanchett. Scenes in the movie were filmed in New Kensington and other Pittsburgh-area locations.

After several delays, a movie filmed in New Kensington and other Pittsburgh-area locations two years ago is coming to theaters.

”Where’d You Go, Bernadette” is being released Aug. 16 but will hit area theaters — including Cinemark at the Pittsburgh Mills, AMC at the Waterfront in West Homestead, and Regal Crown Center in Washington, Pa. — a day earlier on the night of Thursday, Aug. 15.

Based on a 2012 novel by Maria Semple, the movie stars Cate Blanchett as Bernadette Fox. It follows Fox, who goes missing before a family vacation to Antarctica. The story is narrated by Bernadette’s 15-year-old daughter, played by Emma Nelson, who tries to track down her reclusive mother.

Other stars include Billy Crudup, Kristen Wiig, James Urbaniak, Judy Greer, Troian Bellisario, Zoe Chao and Laurence Fishburne.

It was directed by Richard Linklater, who also made “Last Flag Flying” starring Bryan Cranston, Steve Carell and Fishburne in the Pittsburgh area, including the Alle-Kiski Valley.

Scenes for “Bernadette” were filmed in New Kensington in the summer of 2017.

Despite being set in Seattle, the movie was filmed in Pittsburgh and Vancouver, with Pittsburgh standing in for Seattle.

The film had originally been scheduled for a Mother’s Day release in May 2018 but was delayed, first until October of that year and then until March 2019.

It then had an Aug. 9 release date before being changed to Aug. 16.

In January, Variety reported that a representative of Annapurna Pictures said that August has served well as a launching pad for release of female-skewing films, and that “Bernadette” will offer a change of pace after a summer of sequels and action movies.

Other movies being released the weekend of Aug. 16 include “Good Boys,” “47 Meters Down: Uncaged,” “Blinded by the Light,” “Aquarela” and “Driven.”
