The newest locally owned hot dog shop in Springdale appeared to be a big hit with customers on its grand opening.
Pittsburgh Street Hot Dogs, located at 551 Pittsburgh St., officially opened Friday. The shop is leasing the building that formerly housed DD’s Catering.
Owner James Reddy Jr., a Springdale resident, said he was overwhelmed by the response from the community on opening day. He said there was line of customers outside a couple of minutes before opening at 11 a.m.
Reddy has more than 20 years of experience in the restaurant industry. He previously owned two businesses in Swissvale and is minority owner of Park Pizza & Cream in the Regent Square section of Pittsburgh.
The idea of opening the hot dog shop came to him after seeing a lack of hot dog shops in his town.
“We are excited for the future,” Reddy said. “And we really appreciate the community’s and customers’ response.”
According to Reddy, more than 100 orders were fulfilled during the lunch time rush — between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.
“We did a whole day’s worth of business during lunch. We are happy about that,” he said.
Reddy said the shop took three months to remodel. The 600-square-foot shop has indoor seating for 12 to 16 people, with plans to add outdoor seating and a patio.
The menu features a variety of items, including rotating specialty hot dogs, a lunchbox meal, fries, chips and more. The shop will also partner with a local bakery and brewery to further expand its menu.
Customers were excited to see a new business in town. Noah Adams of Lower Burrell heard about the hot dog shop from Facebook.
“I like seeing a new business open, and I thought I’d give it a try,” Adams said.
Kelly McCree of Springdale was ecstatic when she saw a hot dog place was opening not too far from her. She said Springdale needed a place like this.
“I think I am going to really like this place,” she said.
Steven Monnich of Springdale said he enjoys supporting local businesses and was happy to see a locally owned hot dog shop.
He said the environment was busy but he was happy to see the turnout for a grand opening.
“You can tell they are working hard to make this place work. I hope it’s successful,” Monnich said.
The shop is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
