Motorists who need to travel the Pennsylvania Turnpike between the Allegheny Valley and Pittsburgh exits overnight on Saturday will face long detours to get around a bridge construction project.

The turnpike will be closed in both directions between Allegheny Valley (Exit 47) and Pittsburgh (Exit 57) for five hours starting at 11:59 p.m. on Saturday.

Crews will be removing beams from the original overhead bridge that carries traffic along Center Road over the turnpike at milepost 54.95 in Monroeville.

Eastbound traffic will exit at Allegheny Valley and follow a 28.2 mile posted detour using Freeport Road, Route 910, Route 28, I-579, I-376 and back onto the turnpike at the Pittsburgh interchange.

Motorists traveling westbound will exit at Pittsburgh and take a 40.9 mile detour following I-376, I-279/Ft. Duquesne Bridge, Route 28, Route 910, Freeport Road and back onto the turnpike at the Allegheny Valley Interchange.

The road is expected to open at 5 a.m. on Sunday, according to the Turnpike Commission.
