Two 9/11 observance ceremonies will be held on Saturday in Lower Burrell.

One will take place at the American Legion Post 868 at 9:30 a.m. and the other at Flyer’s Field off in the afternoon.

Both events are open to the public.

The American Legion will host a 45-minute 9/11 service starting at 9:30 a.m. at its Lower Burrell post. The memorial event will feature speakers such as state Rep. Bob Brooks, Lower Burrell Councilman Chris Fabry and Post 868 Commander Ed Zollinger.

About a dozen local fire departments and local police departments will attend with a display of a large American flag hung between two ladder fire trucks. The Legion’s honor guard and marine detachment will attend.

Free refreshments will be offered to the public before and following the ceremony.

Post 868 has a 9/11 memorial on its grounds featuring a beam from one of the World Trade Center’s towers.

“It is really important to remember 9/11 attacks on American soil,” said Zollinger, who has participated at more than a dozen 9/11 memorial ceremonies at the Lower Burrell post.

The American Legion had held 9/11 memorial ceremonies annually since the attacks. Local officials, first responders and members of the community have participated.

“I commend the American Legion for hosting this event each year,” Fabry said. “The attacks on Sept. 11th were a defining moment in our nation’s history.”

First responders will be honored during halftime at three youth football games at Flyers Field along Route 56. The Flyers will be playing youth football teams from Plum.

“With the 20th anniversary of 9/11 this year, it resonated with the organization, and this is just one way we can give back,” said Nadine Virag, president of the Lower Burrell Flyers Football.

Additionally, the Flyers will donate a portion of all game proceeds to two national nonprofits founded after 9/11: The Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation and Tuesday’s Children.

Admission is $3.
