Lower Burrell is looking for applicants to fill a full-time police officer position expected to open later this year and to build a pool of available applicants, according to Amy Rockwell, city administrator.
The city currently has 17 full-time officers.
The starting salary for a Lower Burrell police officer is about $58,000 annually with benefits. After a year of employment, the salary increases to about $67,600.
Lower Burrell’s Civil Service Commission will test applicants for full-time police officers on May 21 at the Allegheny County Police Training Center in North Park in Allegheny County.
There are a number of requirements for applicants.

Applicants must be at least 21 years age and meet a number of qualifications including being a U.S. citizen, holding a valid Pennsylvania Act 120 Police Officers Certification, having passed the final Act 120 state exam, possessing a valid driver’s license recognized by the Commonwealth, and being free from convictions for disqualifying criminal offenses.
Completed applications, along with the processing fee, will be accepted until 5 p.m., May 1. Applications must be returned in-person, or by the applicant’s designee, to the City of Lower Burrell, 2800 Bethel Street, during normal working hours, Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications will be scheduled for a physical agility test and a written Civil Service examination on May 21 at 9 a.m. at the Allegheny County Police Training Center, 700 West Ridge Drive in North Park. Applicants arriving late will not be permitted to test.
