A Ford City man is accused of stealing more than $13,000 worth of trading cards from a New Kensington store.

Police say Jeffrey James Spang, 48, stole from the Feisty Goblin store along Fifth Avenue in New Kensington on at least 12 occasions.

The total reported loss was $13,118, according to a criminal complaint.

New Kensington police say they were called to the store in late November for a suspected retail theft. Surveillance video showed Spang placing merchandise directly in a bag, or distracting workers and stealing the items by leaving the store, according to the complaint.

Investigators obtained a search warrant for Spang’s vehicle, which was outside the store. The search turned up more packs of stolen trading cards, the complaint said.

Police believe those trading cards are rare, and were allegedly stolen around the Pittsburgh-area region, according to the Westmoreland County District Attorney’s office.

People with information about the cards are encouraged to contact New Kensington Police at 724-339-7533 and ask for Det. Phil Huth.

Spang is charged with retail theft. A preliminary hearing is scheduled Thursday before New Kensington District Judge Frank J. Pallone Jr.
