A Ford City man is accused of stealing more than $13,000 worth of trading cards from a New Kensington store.
Police say Jeffrey James Spang, 48, stole from the Feisty Goblin store on Fifth Avenue in New Kensington on at least 12 occasions.
The total reported loss was $13,118, according to a criminal complaint.
New Kensington police say they were called to the store in late November for a suspected retail theft. Surveillance video showed Spang placing merchandise in a bag or distracting workers and stealing items by leaving the store, according to the complaint.
Investigators obtained a search warrant for Spang’s vehicle, which was outside the store. The search turned up more packs of stolen trading cards, the complaint said.
Police believe those trading cards are rare and were stolen around the Pittsburgh region, according to the Westmoreland County District Attorney’s Office.
Jim Radeshak, owner of the Feisty Goblin, said his store was alerted of the alleged thefts after being in contact with other gaming store owners.
“Theft is common at all stores, especially with how popular Pokemon is at this time and how expensive it is,” Radeshak said.
Four other stores in the Pittsburgh region have recently been hit with stolen merchandise that is connected to Spang, Radeshak said.
“It’s sad that it happens,” Radeshak said. “We have to change some things in our store to be extra vigilant about it.”
People with information about the cards are encouraged to contact New Kensington police at 724-339-7533 and ask for Detective Phil Huth.
Spang is charged with retail theft. A preliminary hearing is scheduled Thursday before New Kensington District Judge Frank J. Pallone Jr.
