An Apollo man will serve up to four years in prison for burglarizing a Vandergrift home.

Matthew Carl Hubert, 23, pleaded guilty to charges of burglary, theft and receiving property in connection with a heist last summer.

According to court records, Hubert was detained Aug. 5 by a Vandergrift homeowner who was alerted to a potential burglary by his barking dog.

Police said that homeowner spotted Hubert snooping around his property. He used his dog to help restrain Hubert until police arrived.

Investigators said they searched two bags in Hubert’s possession and found jewelry, a power drill and other items.

One of items was a school class ring with an engraved name.

Police said they found the address of the ring’s owner and, when they went to his home in Vandergrift, found a basement door ajar and a broken window. That homeowner, who was out of town on vacation, identified his ring among the items found on Hubert, according to court records.

Westmoreland County Court Judge Meagan Bilik-DeFazio sentenced Hubert to serve two to four years in prison.

Hubert is eligible to spend a portion of his sentence in a state boot camp program.
