Man sentenced to at least 12 years in prison for child rape incident in Arnold
A Washington, D.C., man was sentenced Friday to serve up to 34 years in prison for the rape and sexual assault of an Arnold teenager.
Following a jury trial in August, Delonte Haynes, 28, was convicted of four charges, among them rape of a child and involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, in connection with incidents that occurred while he was living in Arnold in 2014 and 2015. He exposed a teenage boy to pornography and forced him to engage in sexual acts.
Haynes denied the allegations during his two-day trial.
In court Friday, the victim’s mother read a letter that summarized the impact the crimes have had on her son and her own feelings about why Haynes should serve a long prison sentence.
“If he was not in jail I would be angry, and he would do this to other people. And it would seem like I made this up,” the boy’s mother testified.
Westmoreland County Judge Rita Hathaway sentenced Haynes to 12 to 34 years in prison. That penalty includes a 10- to 20-year prison sentence for the rape of a child and two consecutive one- to seven-year terms for indecent assault and corruption of a minor convictions.
Haynes previously served a four-month jail sentence in 2015 for conviction of a sexual offense in Washington, D.C.
Members of the victim’s family and Haynes’ supporters were involved in a physical confrontation outside the courthouse during a lunch break on the first day of the August trial.
No arrests resulted from that incident, and there were no incidents Friday, either during or after the sentencing hearing, which was attended by the victim, his mother and one of Haynes’ family members.
