Marine Corps League holding annual state meeting in Westmoreland County
More than 200 members of the Marine Corps League are expected to gather for the group’s 74th annual state convention this week in Westmoreland County.
Opening ceremonies will be Friday morning after two days of organizational meetings at Hempfield’s Ramada Hotel & Conference Center by Wyndham, said Fred Neilen, vice commander in the league’s District 10. The convention wraps up Sunday.
The Young Marines of Westmoreland County will present the color guard and Youngwood resident Mia Logan, 19, will sing the National Anthem, Neilen said.
He said Harrison’s Frank Bavetz, a 94-year-old Okinawa battle veteran, is expected to attend. Bavetz is not scheduled to be honored by the state group, but the Alle-Kiski Detachment will recognize him.
Seminar speakers will include those from Marines For Life, a new organization that is helping Marines leave active duty and transition into civilian jobs, Neilen said.
The Marine Corps League collects toys and performs numerous other acts of charity annually.
There are 71 active league detachments in the state. The Alle-Kiski Detachment is the second-largest.
