Memorial Day events in the Alle-Kiski Valley
The following Memorial Day observances are planned Monday in the Alle-Kiski Valley unless otherwise noted:
Apollo
Volunteers are needed at 7 a.m. Saturday to place flags on the graves of veterans in Riverview Cemetery and Historic Apollo Cemetery. Apollo-Ridge School District students can earn community service hours by checking in with Marvin Geer when they arrive.
East Deer
The American Legion will conduct a service at 10:15 a.m. at the East Deer Memorial at the walking track off Grant Street.
Indiana Township
The Indiana Township Memorial Day observance is changed. The Historical Commission full ceremony and reception are canceled. At 11 a.m. the American Legion will have a brief service and a bugler will play “Taps” at the Veterans Memorial, 3710 Saxonburg Blvd.
Kiski Township
Kiski Township American Legion will sponsor a service at 10 a.m. Monday at Fairview Cemetery, next to Boiling Springs Presbyterian Church on Route 56, Spring Church. Those attending should use appropriate precautions and observe social distancing. Details: Diane Baer, 724-478-1786
Leechburg
A brief ceremony will be at 11 a.m. at Freedom Square on Market Street. The Rev. Gary Lyon will lead the prayer and Mayor Wayne Dobos will speak. There will be a rifle salute and the playing of “Taps.”
Lower Burrell
The Veterans of Foreign Wars will place flags on veterans’ graves at Greenwood Memorial Park on Saturday. Anyone wanting to help should meet at 8:30 a.m. at the post, 1601 Wildlife Lodge Road.
Vandergrift
There will be no parade or breakfast this year. Services will be at 9 a.m. at the Vandergrift Bridge, and afterward at North Vandergrift Memorial in Parks, East Vandergrift Memorial, St. Gertrude Cemetery, Vandergrift Cemetery, and the Century 21 Memorial and Kiski Area High School Memorial, both in Allegheny Township. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. at the Casino Theater. Afterward the honor guard will go directly to St. Gertrude Cemetery for a 12:30 p.m. blessing service for Bob McDermott. All veterans are welcome to participate.
Verona
The Verona Historical Society will hold a brief memorial service at 10 a.m. at the doughboy monument to pay tribute to our surviving World War II veterans in conjunction with the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II. Verona Vietnam Veterans will serve as an honor guard and place a wreath. Those attending are asked to observe social distancing.
