Memorial Day happenings around the Alle-Kiski Valley
All events are on Monday unless otherwise noted.
Allegheny Township
The Pennsylvania Hero Walk Team, also known as Kiski Valley Veterans and Patriots, will sponsor a service at 10 a.m. Saturday at the War Memorial, 21 Towne Center Drive. The event will honor the late Sgt. Jason M. McClary, and his name will be added to the memorial wall. T-shirts will be sold for $10, and money raised will be matched by Pa. Hero Walk to benefit a scholarship fund for McClary’s children. There will be two guest speakers and refreshments. Details: Pa. Hero Walk on Facebook or Al Pulice, 412-862-1672
Brackenridge
The American Legion will have a service at 1 p.m. Sunday in Brackenridge Park.
Indiana Township
Disabled American Veterans, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars will host a ceremony at 11 a.m. at the township Veterans Memorial at town hall, 3710 Saxonburg Blvd., Dorseyville. Refreshments will be served afterward.
Kiski Township
Kiski Township American Legion will sponsor a service at 10:15 a.m. at Fairview Cemetery, next to Boiling Springs Presbyterian Church on Route 56, Spring Church. Bring a lawn chair. Details: Diane, 724-478-1786.
Leechburg
The parade will form at 9:15 a.m. at Second Street and River Avenue and begin at 10 a.m. Veterans who need a ride should meet here. Anyone who owns an old truck, car or motorcycle is welcome to participate. Convertible cars are needed to carry veterans in the parade. Vietnam veteran Marine E5 Jerry “Bull” Baylor will be the grand marshal and guest speaker.
Lower Burrell
Parade line up will be at 10:30 a.m. at Schreiber Street. The parade will begin at 11 a.m. at city hall and proceed down Leechburg Road to the American Legion on Wildlife Lodge Road. A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. at the American Legion followed by an open house.
New Kensington
A service will be at 9:15 a.m. in Roosevelt Park, Arnold. Lineup for the parade will begin at 9:15 a.m. at Drey Street, Arnold. The parade will begin at 10 a.m. and proceed down Fifth Avenue, left on Eighth Street to Barnes Street and right on Barnes Street. A service will be at 10:45 a.m. at the Gold Star Monument on Ninth Street. A luncheon for veterans and parade participants will be at 11:15 a.m. at 819 Fifth Ave., New Kensington. Oakmont
A parade will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the Verona Eagles, 311 James St., and proceed to Verona Cemetery, where a service will be at 11 a.m. Dr. Carl Hasselman will be the speaker. The community chorus will sing for the final time under the direction of Michael Frank.
Pittsburgh
The parade will begin at 10 a.m. at 36th and Butler streets in Lawrenceville and enter the gates of Allegheny Cemetery at about 11 a.m. A service with bagpipers, 21-gun salute and dove release will be at the 1937 Soldiers’ memorial. The Allegheny Cemetery Historical Association will host a community picnic afterward near the Butler Street entrance of the cemetery. There will be a DJ, classic car show, food trucks, free face painting, raffles, prizes and history period re-enactors.
Springdale-Harmar
Springdale Veterans Association will have a service at 1 p.m. Sunday at Deer Creek Cemetery, 902 Russellton Road. Springdale Volunteer Fire Department will have a memorial service at 6 p.m. Sunday at St. Alphonsus Church, 750 Pittsburgh St. Monday services will be at 8 a.m. at the Allegheny River Marina, 8:30 a.m. at St. Mark Lutheran Cemetery, 9 a.m. at Harwick Veterans Memorial, 9:30 a.m. at Orville Honor Roll, and 10 a.m. at Springdale Cemetery on School Street. Participants will parade at 10:30 a.m. from the Veterans Association to the Porter Street memorial for an 11 a.m. service.
Vandergrift
The parade will form in the parking lot of Kiski Area East Elementary School and step off at 10:30 a.m. The procession will go down Franklin Avenue to Grant Avenue and end at the memorial at the Casino Theater, where there will be a service. Retired Army Reserve Col. John Dowling, a 1985 graduate of Apollo-Ridge High School, will be the guest speaker. Any group or individual wishing to participate should call the American Legion post at 724-568-2337.
West Deer, East Deer and Indiana Township
West Deer American Legion and Auxiliary and Sons of the American Legion will hold services at 8:30 a.m. at the Bairdford Memorial, 9 a.m. at the West Deer Municipal Building, 9:30 a.m. at the Rural Ridge Volunteer Fire Department, 10:15 a.m. at the East Deer Memorial, 11 a.m. at the Indiana Township Memorial, 11:45 a.m. at Lakewood Memorial Gardens and 12:30 p.m. at the West Deer American Legion. Lunch will be served after the service at the American Legion. The Jimmy Switalski Military Award and the American Legion Scholarship awards will be presented during lunch.
