A Peoples Gas project will affect traffic in Tarentum beginning Sunday night.

The company will be working in the area of West Seventh Avenue and Mill Street.

Work will be done between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. and is expected to last through Friday.

Peoples Gas spokesman Barry Kukovich said crews will be connecting existing natural gas lines that are currently not connected. He said this will allow for more ways to get gas to customers if there is an outage.

On Friday, PennDOT announced that the work will close westbound West Seventh Avenue (toward East Deer).

It announced a recommended detour that tractor-trailer trucks and other large or heavy trucks would need to follow.

However, motorists in cars and pick-up trucks will be able to get around the construction ares by crossing railroad tracks in East Tarentum, turning onto East Fourth Avenue, driving under the Tarentum Bridge and entering West Tarentum beyond the construction area.

PennDOT’s suggested detour for westbound traffic:

• Take Ross Street (Route 366) across the Tarentum Bridge;

• Bear right toward New Kensington;

• Follow 366 (Stevenson Boulevard) south;

• Turn right onto Second Street, which becomes Industrial Boulevard;

• Turn left onto Ninth Street and cross the New Kensington Bridge.

Eastbound West Seventh will remain open to traffic.

Crews from M. O’Herron Co. will be doing the work, PennDOT said.
