Two churches along Springdale’s Pittsburgh Street — one Catholic, the other Methodist — are now up for sale after extended vacancies.

St. Alphonsus Roman Catholic Church closed in 2022, while Springdale United Methodist Church shuttered last June.

The two former houses of worship sit opposite each other in the heart of Springdale’s main corridor at the corner of Pittsburgh and James streets.

A Howard Hanna Commercial real estate listing has the St. Alphonsus campus — which also includes a former school building and rectory — listed at $650,000.

The church building was constructed in 1926, though the parish had previously been present at that location, according to Catholic Diocese records.

A real estate advertisement for Springdale United Methodist has the church and a neighboring four bedroom home listed for $274,500.

Allegheny County records list Springdale United Methodist’s construction in 1890.

Jeannie Schott, spokeswoman for the Western Pennsylvania Conference of the United Methodist Church, said the church held its final service on June 22, 2025 after voting to close.

She said the church will continue to care for the property as it searches for a buyer.

Before a sale, Schott said, the church would perform its due diligence to make sure a buyer’s intended use is “consistent with the social principles” of the church.

“The hope of the WPA Conference is that the next stage in the life of the property continues to be a benefit to the community as the church had been for so many years,” she said.

Without the two parishes, three churches remain in the borough: St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Springdale United Presbyterian Church and Springdale Open Bible Church, a Pentecostal congregation.
