Eager shoppers wait in line Thursday for the grand opening of the new Aldi store in Hyde Park Plaza, Allegheny Township.

The Alle-Kiski Valley’s newest Aldi supermarket opened shortly before 9 a.m. Thursday, with eager shoppers already waiting in line outside.

Many of the first customers in line received prizes, including Sarah Bilinsky, 18, and Zach Knox, 19, both of Vandergrift. They were first in line, having waited outside the store since midnight.

In April, Aldi publicly committed to opening a store in Allegheny Township, along with three other locations in Western Pennsylvania: Wilkinsburg, Harmony and the upper part of Pittsburgh’s Lawrenceville neighborhood. The Harmony store opened Aug. 29.

The store is part of an ambitious expansion program, through which the company hopes to add 800 stores to its 2,400 by the end of 2028. Much of that growth is slated for Pennsylvania.

Locally, other Aldi locations include New Kensington, Frazer and Monroeville. The chain has 161 stores in Pennsylvania, according to its website.
