Dollar General to open store in Freeport
A new Dollar General store is set to open in Freeport this spring, filling a need in the community.
“It’s a big win for our town,” said Freeport Mayor James Swartz.
Freeport doesn’t have a grocery store, Swartz explained. The closest thing it has to one is a gas station that sells basic items like milk, bread and snacks, he said.
“We really don’t have anything in town,” Swartz said. “I welcome it.”
The store will be located at 408 High St., a road Swartz said many people travel when coming to and from South Buffalo Township. He said he anticipates the store will do well at that location.
Dollar General will sell a variety of basic grocery items, Swartz said.
“Instead of running to a Walmart, people can just run right in town and grab something for a reasonable price,” he said. “They’ll have almost everything you need.”
The store will sell food, health and beauty products, home cleaning supplies, housewares, stationery, seasonal items and basic clothing, according to Dollar General spokeswoman Angela Petkovic.
The store will employ six to 10 employees, she said.
Construction began this winter, Swartz said, and is wrapping up now. The parking lot was paved and painted last week, Swartz said, adding he believes the store will be ready to open this month.
“At this time, a store opening is slated for spring 2021, but understand that construction progress may alter this date,” Petkovic said.
Store hours will be determined closer to the store’s opening, she said.
Dollar General stores have been cropping up throughout the region over the past several years, with locations recently opening in Penn Township and Unity.
A Dollar General is expected to open in Parks Township in May, while plans to open a location in Upper Burrell were recently delayed.
