New Kensington officials cancel Fourth of July fireworks display due to coronavirus concerns
New Kensington has joined a growing list of towns canceling Fourth of July fireworks celebrations.
City officials made the announcement Thursday citing coronavirus concerns.
“I think we should have done it sooner,” Councilman Tim DiMaio said. “Everybody else has done it. How are you going to (have) people 6 feet apart and make sure they have their masks on, especially in the open air? I think it’s a smart move because of the pandemic.”
Councilman Dante Cicconi knows some folks will be disappointed with the change to the Independence Day celebration. He took to Facebook to explain the decision.
“Fireworks are a cherished and much-anticipated component of Fourth of July celebrations across the country,” Cicconi posted. “This was an extremely difficult decision and not taken lightly, but in the end, the health and safety of our citizens and visiting guests are our chief priority and concern.
“I would like to thank all of the volunteers who worked hard to fundraise and plan; those who so graciously donated money, time, and other commodities to ensure a successful event; and the community at large for its support each year. All donations raised prior to today will be utilized towards next year’s celebration. Stay well, and stay safe.”
Pittsburgh canceled its July fireworks and other summer activities in mid-May.
Summit Hose in Tarentum announced about a week earlier that its fireworks would be grounded this July.
